Cotton is grown only in the South Kazakhstan oblast of the Republic of Kazakhstan as only this region has necessary climatic conditions for its cultivation: plenty of sunlight, availability of fertile soil, irrigating water and human recourses. There has been a strong emphasis on the efficient production of cotton in relation to other crops.
  If for the last 14 years the cultivation area of agricultural crops has the tendency to decrease then the cotton has the opposite tendency to increase. The cultivation area for the period from 1991 has increased from 116 thousand hectares to 80 % (88 thousand hectares) and in 2007 it is 720 thousand hectares. 
  However the textile industry does not correspond with the growth potential. Today specific weight of textile industry in total volume of GDP composes 0,4%, in volume of industrial production 1,3%. 
At present there are several new cotton and textile companies working in South Kazakhstan region. These companies have made significant investments in modernization and construction of new cotton processing plants.

"Textiles.KZ" Corporation 

Textile Corporation "Textiles. KZ" started its activity in 2001 by introducing into exploitation a small spinning facility for producing 100% cotton open end yarn, based on old textile plant in Shymkent city, which is the center of the raw cotton cultivating region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 
  In 2004-2005 as a result of investment support of the Government and Financial Institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan the shareholders of corporation has concluded and implemented the project of the reconstruction of buildings, removing old and installation new production equipments.
